Ewha students are known for being
proud of their college, but when it comes to their spring festival Daedong they
are not so proud. In fact, most undergraduates rather visit Akaraka, the Yonsei’s
festival. Since Ewha’s administration have been wondering what is wrong with
Ewha festival, perhaps they should listen to the views of students as they
compare Daedong to Akaraka.

2. Weak
Brand Power

When
we asked college students about the best college festivals, they came up with ‘Akaraka’.
Even for normal people, Akaraka works as a symbol of college life. Originated
from the cheering squad, Akaraka has been a powerful force for many years. So,
many people pay to go to Akaraka and enjoy it even though they are not Yonsei
students. The popularity of “Reply 1994” clearly shows this kind of Koreans’
image of the Shinchon area and Yonsei. Now, you are going to ask us, ‘So, what
is the problem?’ Actually, it is a real problem for Ewha. Since Ewha and Yonsei
are very nearby, many of Ewha students cross the street and would rather go to
Akaraka - Ewha festival really does not attract students. My point here is that
although Daedong is famous and it gives fantasy to many male students in other
colleges, Ewha is like Pepsi trying to beat Coke but cannot. So, would there be
no way for Pepsi to win over Coke? As Pepsi did, Ewha administration has to
come up with some ideas to advertise the festival very sensationally. But how?
We have to make the best of Ewha’s traits; the best women’s college in Korea.
Being a single-gender college is very unique since there are not many of them,
not only in Korea but also in the earth. Actually, Ewha is the best women’s
college in the world. As a solution we want to advise the administration
to think about what they can do with the world’s smartest women.
3. No
Alcohol
The
last point is a hot potato - it is a matter of whether to permit alcohol sales
in the markets. Since alcohol is a symbol of a good time, most students are not
fond of Ewha’s “No Alcohol” policy. On the other hand, the administration has
concerns about what alcohol would bring about. Their reasoning is that women
are usually easy targets for crimes. The problem is that undergraduates still
want to drink during the festival. To ask for the college to permit alcohol, we
had to come up with some ways to control alcohol intake. We suggest limiting
alcohol consumption to the booths – so no one can bring liquor outside of the
market. Also drunkenness should be controlled by banning excessive purchases.
Ewha also has to think about restricting people entering campus, to avoid
problems.
A
successful and popular festival will help Ewha Womans’ University to build a much
better status in society.
